anybody living for more than two years in UK is eligible
for voting. It was absolutely amazing to watch the election
proceedings. Each leader was answerable to any question
posed by the public. The TV channels took full advantage
of this and had the top anchors grill Blair (Labour),
Howard (Conservative) and Kennedy (Liberal Democrat) trio.
Honesty is the key to success in election here.

The TV channels go a long way in educating the public with programmes
about the impact of social and economic policies using interesting 3D
graphics. The height of everything was a mock court trial of the prime
minister where he had to explain with proofs about his decisions to a
jury comprised of members of public. The country thus geared into
election fully aware of the positive and negative traits of each
candidate and party.
Election is organised by professionals, who are sometimes
PhD scholars. There is one MP for about every 50,000
people. Election booths are placed in every small locality.
Sometimes ballot boxes are even kept in the drawing
hall of some volunteer. All over the churches and community
centers became the hub of electoral activity. The election
is held until 10pm at night. So there is no need for
a declared holiday in order to hold an election. One
can go to about one's work as usual and cast the vote
when back home after work. There were no long queues
in the election booth.

It was like a mini mela. Watching that on the TV channels
was extremely interesting. While a result was announced
in any constituency, all the contesting candidates will
clap for the winner and then the winner will give a
short speech about his manifesto.
I was amazed to see how they conducted themselves very
professionally. In fact, many contestants have university
degree in economics, social studies or politics. So
they are able to explain very clearly to the public
what changes they intend to bring about. When they were
interviewed that night, the TV anchors peppered it with
humorous quotes and witty comments, which made it very
enjoyable to watch. We were glued to the television
until we realised that it was 1am and then we hurriedly
scrambled to bed.
The next morning greeted us with the news of Tony Blair
retaining his prime ministership. Then, it was back
to job as usual. There were no pompous celebrations
or gala victory ceremonies. Above all, what really surprised
me was the way the losing party conducted itself. The
conservative leader, a Cambridge alumni, volunteered
to step down as the party leader. He then brought a
lot of young members to the forefront, so that the party
will have more choice to choose the right leader. Why
can't this happen in India? Why don't party leaders
step down on losing an election? Why don't educated
youngsters come to the forefront of politics? ¸É×
