Lord God,
the day of our salvation dawned
when the Blessed Virgin gave birth to your Son.
As we celebrate her nativity
grant us your grace and your peace.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
FACTS
- Mother of Jesus
Husband: Joseph Other Children:
James, Joseph, Judas, Simon, and daughters
HISTORY
- A young woman named Mary received a visit from
an angel. The angel told her "Thou art highly
favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou
among women (Luke 1:28)." The angel saw that Mary
was troubled by his sudden appearance, so he went
on to explain her role in one of the greatest
events in the history of man. She would conceive
the Son of God and call him Jesus. Being a virgin
and engaged, Mary was anxious about this pregnancy.
The angel told her that the child would be conceived
through the Holy Spirit. Mary's answer was "I
am the Lord's servant...May it be to me as you
said. (Luke 1:38)"
Later Mary discovers her cousin Elizabeth was
pregnant after being barren for many years. She
goes to visit her and during this visit Elizabeth's
unborn child leaps for joy in her presence. Mary
expresses her joy to God in song and praise.
Mary the mother of Jesus was a virgin before and
after giving birth to Jesus. Furthermore, Mary
was ``full of grace'' from the moment of her conception
and that every grace received by Christians passes
somehow through her hands .
MOTHER OF GOD, MOTHER OF ALL CHRISTIANS
- In the same way as the woman who bore you is
called your mother and not the mother of your
body only, Mary is the mother of the whole person
of Jesus Christ, who is God (cf. Colossians 2:9).
The Church proclaimed this truth in the Council
of Ephesus in 431 A.D.
TRUTH
- Is it true that Mary, the mother of Jesus,
has appeared on a number of occasions in the last
two centuries bringing important messages from
God?
We believe that the visions of Mary that have
occurred in Lourdes, France, Medjugorje, Yugoslavia,
and many other places, can be evaluated on the
basis of scriptural, factual, and psychological
evidence.
Bernadette Soubirous, the young adolescent girl
who had a series of visions of Mary at Lourdes,
convinced thousands of people of her sincerity.
On one occasion, several thousand people observed
her as she spoke with an invisible visitor that
only she was able to see. There is little reason
to doubt that she actually did see what she considered
a vision of Mary.

BRIEF HISTORY OF VEILANKANNI
- There
is no historical evidence for the birth of this
pilgrim center Veilankanni. But the traditional
story in and around this place says that the incidents
occurred at 3 different places in the Southern
corner of India at the end of the 16th Century
and at the beginning of the 17th Century.
FIRST INCIDENCE
- The first incident took place near a tank at
Anna Pillai street at Veilankanni. A beautiful
lady appeared to a shepherd boy and asked for
some milk for the child in her arms. Though he
was afraid that his master would be angry at him,
he offered milk as he could not resist the sweet
smile on the mother's face. When he reached his
Master's house he found the milk surging to the
brim of the vessel. On learning from the boy of
the strange happenings the master also hastened
to the tank which is now known as 'Our Lady's
Tank'. The news spread and the devotion to the
Heavenly Mother took roots in the hearts of the
people.
SECOND INCIDENCE
- A few years later another apparition occurred
to a lame Hindu boy at a place called Naduthittu
at Veilankanni. The mother of the lame boy left
him under a fig tree and went to sell butter milk
to thirsty travellers. The boy suddenly saw a
lady carrying a child in her arm in the midst
of bright light. She smiled at him affectionately
and asked him to give some water to drink. After
accepting the drink, the lady asked him to go
to a Catholic gentleman at Nagapattinam and to
tell him to build a church on that spot "as I
have chosen this place to favor my people". She
cured him and he ran to carry out her instruction.
Shortly, a small church was erected on that spot
where the first miracle was done by our Mother
of Health (Arokia Matha) as she was to be called
thereafter. A beautiful statue similar to her
apparition was placed in the Church and devotees
from all over the country belonging to various
religions, castes and communities began to gather
there to praise the Mother and to beg for favors.
The mother substantiated the statement of St.
Bernard that no one who ever sought her help was
left disappointed.
THIRD INCIDENCE
- Later in the beginning of 17th Century, a Portuguese
Merchant vessel sailing from Mocao to Ceylon was
caught in a terrible storm. The frightened sailors
knelt down and invoked Our Lady, 'the Star of
the Seas' to save their lives and the vessel.
Immediately The storm subsided and the vessel
reached safely the shore near Veilankanni. It
was the 8th of September,
the birthday of Our Blessed Mother. The
sailors in grateful remembrance built a new Chapel
and the altar was decorated with porcelain plates
painted with biblical scenes. These plates which
can still be seen at the main Altar of the Shrine
Basilica bear testimony to the kindness and love
of our lady. The original Sailors' Chapel was
enlarged later but the old little sanctuary and
Altar were preserved intact. The church was further
enlarged and additions were made in the course
of years and in 1962 the church was given the
status of a Minor Basilica by Pope John XXIII.
In this wonderful manner, the glory of Mary, the
Blessed Mother of Jesus and the loving mother
of all the people in the world is still spreading
from the small village of Veilankanni.
