As people of
this world, we are anxious about so many things.
St.Paul wrote ‘Have no anxiety about anything’
(Philip 4:6) for anxiety is a sin of unbelief.
If it is a sin and not good for us, how do we
overcome it? The solution to this problem of anxiety
can be summed up in 4 words :
1. Bury
We must bury a lot of the past that haunts and
harasses us. Bury your past sins, if they have
been repented of and forgiven. Bury your past
resentments, the anger against those who insulted
you and bury your past sorrows
2. Simplify
This was a philosopher Thoreau’s exhortation
“Simplify! Simplify!” He was echoing Socrates.
Much of our modern anxiety springs from passion
to acquire things, material things, money, possessions,
etc. If we simplify our life, we might enrich
our life beyond measure (Matt.6:25, 33)
3. Pray
‘But in everything by prayer and supplication….’
(Philip 4:6). If anything is big enough to worry
about, then it is big enough to pray about. Pray
in detail, pray with thanksgiving. For thanksgiving
is an awareness of our blessings and it cannot
coexist with anxiety.
4. Trust
The positive alternative to anxiety is faith.
“Why are you anxious men of little faith?” asked
Jesus (Matt 6:30). Our basic need is security
and it cannot be found in ourselves or in the
things of the world. It can be only in God who
revealed Himself in the person of Jesus. Why don’t
we trust Him?
Bury, Simplify, Pray and Trust. Shall we overcome
worry, anxiety by doing these 4 things and face
the future with courage and confidence.
