Q. . Why is Mahakumbabhishekam performed for temples once in twelve years?
It is like recharging your mobile phone. You do it periodically, don’t you?
So it is with temples.
Temples of yore were charged with the powers passed on to them by Siddha purushas.
Siddha purushas are personifications of immeasurable spiritual power.
The present day brick and mortar temples are constructed by human effort and idols are sculpted and consecrated, so ways are found to charge the temple with divine power.
That is why Kumbabhishekams are performed.
The reason for the time frame could be that based on the insight our ancestors had in astronomical calculations, they would have deduced that temples have the capacity to retain the divine power for twelve years after which they have to be recharged.
Mantras when uttered with fervour have such immense power
that the world has not yet tapped yet.
