You
too can become Anjaneya.
Why Anjaneya - - because the parents of this universe
Rama and Sita themselves revered Anjaneya as their parents
rolled in one!
How to become Anjaneya? Thirukkural proclaims, 'What
returns can this world give to the rain that pours selflessly,
expecting no returns whatsoever?' So too was Anjaneya. He
rose to a pivotal position because he cared for and served
others at the first opportunity, waiting not for any
returns.
Anjaneya served as the minister of Sugreeva. He met Rama and
espoused the cause of restoring Sugreeva's kingdom from Vali's
clutches. He did not gain anything personally out of this.
Based on his intimacy with Rama, he could have very easily
asked Rama to crown him king. But that was never on his mind.
He embodied the Purananooru words, 'The world is, because of
those who live for others'. (thanakkena vaazha
pirarkkuriyar).
Purananooru states, 'There are noble souls who do not live for
themselves but are prepared to give up even themselves for
others. They do not partake of even nectar, if that would
bring them dishonour. They will give up even their lives in
the cause of glorifying nobility'.
Anjaneya could have dealt on business terms with Rama, 'You
were exiled to the forest and roamed around like a mendicant.
I will help you vanquish Ravana, but you must share your
princely rights with me'. But he never stooped to that level.
He was the catalytic force that helped Sugreeva regain his
throne and also located the place where Sita was held in
captivity.
When Vibeeshana surrendered to Rama, everyone else spoke
against him. It was Anjaneya who declared, 'Since he has
surrendered (performed saranagathi) to you, O Rama, you must
support him'. After the battle with Ravana, Vibeeshana was
crowned as the king of Lanka. Did Anjaneya ever clamour for
any favour from Vibheeshana on the grounds that it was he who
supported the latter?
After his coronation, Rama invited Anjaneya to ask for
anything he wished. And Hanuman replied, 'I do not need
anything, Rama'. Hanuman was the Prime Mover in Ramayana - -
he saved Rama and Lakshmana from perishing in the battle,
fetched the Sanjeevi herb for their revival, saved them from
the scheming clutches of Mayil Ravana. Rama would have given
Hanuman anything he wanted. And yet, he did not ask for
anything.
See what he attained as a result of his nobility. He
secured Rama Himself. Rama gave him a warm embrace,
declaring 'I give you Myself, for that is the best of me'.
Kambar writes, 'Thannaiye thanakku tharum Thiruppatham', 'The
Lotus Feet that granted itself to itself'. How did that
happen? Since Anjaneya was in constant thoughts of Rama, he
had become Rama Himself. Which is why he was able to achieve
more than Rama could - - because he was Anjaneya+Rama, and
hence greater than Rama.
Padmapadha, despite being AdiSankara's disciple, was
able to achieve much more than Sankara - - feats like walking
on water, assuming the Rudra Roopa of Nrisimha and vanquishing
Kabalika who intended to do away with Sankara. This was
possible only because Padmapadha had instated AdiSankara in
his heart and soul, and therefore had become
Padmapadha+Sankara which is greater than Sankara. Simple
arithmetic, is it not?
If you perceive SivaShankar Baba to be a powerful entity,
aspire to possess me by placing your thoughts on me always and
you will excel me, because you + I > I . This evolution is
the hallmark of spirituality. Azhwar sings, 'You have a vast
kingdom in the Ocean of Milk (Paarkadal), and yet You
condescended to carve a niche in this petty heart of
mine".
All that Anjaneya did was to be in constant service to Rama
and in constant meditation on Rama. No selfish motive. That
is the brand equity of Hanuman -- swift and constant
service to Rama and constant meditation on the Lord's Lotus
Feet. That fetched him Rama Himself. Learn this one lesson
from Anjaneya and you can easily attain the Lord.
