Will you please listen, Politicians?
Coming back to TN election results, it is the moderate to good performance
of erstwhile DMK government that went unrewarded. As the poor democracy
can not be contented with rewarding good performance anything except
the excellence in governance, the DMK government had to go. However,
the AIADMK and Amma should not think that it is the mandate just to
rule. No doubt they got the verdict of people to rule for the next 5
years, no matter the Intellectual elite would continue to ignore or
interpret the result in many different ways as it suits them. But Ms
Jayalalitha should see a message in it from the masses. They want to
try with different rules and for the lack of a third alternative, they
have voted for her party.
Job
in hand
The top agenda for the in-coming government must be to address the issue
of water scarcity in major cities. Also, she must put good use of neighbourly
relations (with Mr. Krishna in Karnataka, with the in-coming Cong Government
in Kerala) and must develop good relations with TDP in Andhra Pradesh.
she must amicably solve all water related issues including the issue
of Mullai-Periyar dam. The issue that could transform into life and
death for the poor is the Public Distribution System (PDS) and this
must be made genuine and fool-proof. The law & order must be made tight.
There should not be any leniency in terms of handling Veerappans or
any form of extremism, be it cast-based or religion-based clashes. The
education must be made more quality-oriented and the percentage fund
allocation for education should go up.
The small industries and construction activities must be geared as it
would generate a lot of employment opportunities. Any errors of her
past regime must be strictly avoided. She must respect the support of
people and give the State a corruption-free, transparent, and efficient
government. It would also be a prejudiced view if one thinks that her
second tenure would also be afflicted with corruption. The finance of
the state must be strengthened. Above all, all round development of
TamilNadu is wanted and not just the development in Chennai.!Any collision
with a stable Central government would not be pardoned by people. The
opposition and the alliance parties must be taken along.
Opposition, You have more crucial role!
DMK and Mr. Chidambaram need not feel ditched or punished for their
good work. The opposition ("watch dogs") has a more crucial role than
the ruling party in a democracy and people have not defeated them. Rather
people have given them a more important job now. If they were fed-up
with the erstwhile government, they would have gone unrepresented in
the in-coming assembly. The swinging of numbers from anywhere between
a single digit to 200 and odd has become very common in Tamilnadu thanks
to the "alliance politics". The election
of Mr.Karunanidhi and the DMK representation in assembly made possible
by the people conveys a message that they expect some good work from
them. If Mr.Karunanidhi really meant that it is going to be his last
term in Assembly, may the State expect him to honour peoples' verdict
in electing him and prove beyond doubt his "statesmanship" in the assembly
once more. He should not succumb to ego politics and resign his MLA
seat. All that people expect from Mr.Karunanidhi and DMK is to act like
a conscience-keeper of the in-coming government. As an opposition also,
DMK and its leader Mr. Karunanidhi can serve the State still better.
