Human civilization grew with cultural and religious evolution
backed by scientific advancements. When these factors are stronger
today than ever before, ironically the current situation in the
world threatens the unity and peace of humankind thanks to the
conflicts between societies, countries, and ideologies. They often
breed hatred amongst individuals and at a higher plane they destroy
the fabric of humanity and societal peace. At an even higher plane,
they take the status of ideology driven terrorism. All
these end up in colossal loss of material and human lives. They
threaten the very existence of human species on this earth.
The incidences that dominated the major part of the 20th century
and the early years of this century clearly indicate one thing-
'growing intolerance to the divisions amongst us and intolerance
to the views and philosophies of others'. Pradip N Khandwalla
in his book on "Excellence Through Creativity"
insists that a free thinking without undue restrictions and constraints,
and accommodation of others' views and opinions are the basic
requirements of a "creative society". Only a creative
society can find the ways to arrive at alternate and/or compromising
solutions in confused situations that conflict mutual interests.
This alone could help in resolving issues and would accommodate
different hues of human society on this planet. And this alone
could ensure different ideologies and different human races to
coexist.
All these clashes - at a micro level are caste clashes in
a society and at the macro level are like the two world wars in
the first half of 20th century, clashes between India and
Pakistan, India and China, clash between Jewish and Islam, clash
between Hindus and Muslims, attack on America by Al Quaeda, US
war against Afghanistan and Iraq. These are all due to the
quest to acquire a piece of land or to assert the self-supremacy.
These are driven by our incapability to live with different ideologies.
We, homo sepians evolved over thousands of years. We made our
lives comfortable and fast-moving and all this was made possible
by shrinking the size of seven continents into a small global
village thanks to advancements in communication, transport and
human interactions.
If we look at the formation of various fora in the last 60 years
in United Nations, they were all aimed at sharing our
views and concerns. But at sometimes, it is widely felt or perceived
that the voices of underdeveloped or developing nations are not
heard in United Nations. Recently when this author visited United
States, like any other visitor, I was curious rather anxious to
visit the site where the sky scrapping twin towers existed. When
I was standing on the connecting bridge of the World Financial
Center and was watching the construction activities
that were going on at the place where the Twin Towers
once stood, one question erupted in my mind- why all this happened
and why so many people were killed in bringing down the twin towers?
There are many theories going round but all the reasons can be
attributed either to the hatred towards capitalism or hatred due
to religious conflicts. Whatever it be, the innocents in Twin
Towers got killed and today innocents in Iraq are killed. What
for all these when we claim that today we are the most evolved
and advanced creatures on this planet? How do we make sure that
there is a lasting peace on this earth? It is not easy to resolve
the conflicts within next few years as the enmity or hatred is
deep-rooted and fueled over centuries generation after generation.
There are three ways by which we can erase this hatred in the
next one or two centuries. Considering the fact that our evolution
took place over many centuries and also our hatred for each other
was nurtured over many centuries, this time period (of one or
two centuries) to correct the mistake is not too long. What are
these three ways? They are Inter-racial and Inter-religious
marriages, multiple citizenship to create borderless world, and
creating one Global Village for unified economy. We would
discuss on each one of them in the next part of this article.
